A guide to the hide
Our TUMBLED leather is available in three distinct pieces – bend, half shoulder, and belly – which have unique characteristics, sizes and structure. Please read the product descriptions carefully before purchasing to ensure you select the pieces that are best suited to your approach.
Bend: This is a large panel from the centre of the hide, with the most consistent fibre and grain structure. The grain has a smooth and sometimes pebbled quality across the panel. It is also common to see scratches and other evidence of the animal’s life grazing in British pastures, where hedgerows and fences are necessary.
Half shoulder: Because these pasture-fed animals have spent their lives lifting and lowering their heads while grazing, the shoulders have more pronounced growth marks. The shoulder is a strong and dense part of the hide; each piece varies in shape and size. It is common to see scratch marks from hedges, trees or fences.
Belly: The belly has a looser fibre — because the belly of an animal needs to stretch. These are long narrow pieces, best suited to small leather goods, trims, and design uses that embrace a more yielding temper.
SUEDE is available in bend pieces only.
FIRM is available in bend pieces only.
